KHOMEINI’S IRAN: EIGHTEEN YEARS ON
As Iran commemorates the eighteenth anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini, there are signs that the Islamic Republic is moving away from the core principles of its founder. The recent negotiations with the United States in Baghdad underlie this fundamental shift away from Khomeinism, the anti-American rhetoric of Iranian officialdom notwithstanding. The memory of
Ayatollah Khomeini serves as an ideological control on the Islamic Republic, masking deep internal divisions and moderating the regime’s instinctive pragmatism. Finding the correct balance between ideology and politics has never been so important, especially in light of Iran’s growing geopolitical weight. If the Islamic Republic is estranged from the diverse forces of Islamic revivalism, it may well miss the opportunity to become one of the “great powers” of the 21st century.
