Islamism Digest

The Centre for the Study of Terrorism produces a monthly journal, Islamism Digest, which is devoted to detailed coverage and comprehensive analysis of Islamic trends, issues, personalities and terrorism from the Islamic perspective. Featuring in-depth and information-rich articles and interviews, Islamism Digest is the only authoritative English-language journal dedicated to this area of research. The journal brings together authoritative analysis from across the Muslim world, in an effort to present a diversity of views.

Islamism Digest has three core features:

Primary sources

Much of the information is supplied by well-placed primary sources that is simply not available in the public domain.

Indigenous media sources

When using information from the media, we try to restrict this to the Arab and other indigenous media. The thinking behind this is that we can understand these phenomena better by relying on indigenous sources.

In-house research

Articles and interviews are produced in-house. However, we may accept contributions from others, provided these comply with our guidelines. In essence we will only consider articles that provide unique and in-depth information. The author must demonstrate deep expertise and access to
primary sources. If you are interested in contributing please contact us on info@cfsot.com

Islamism Digest – February 2007
CRACKDOWN ON THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD: A TALE OF AMERICAN DECLINE
The Egyptian regime’s latest crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood may be more prolonged than previous campaigns but it still fits into a long pattern of periodic repression of the world’s oldest and largest Islamic movement. But the untold story behind the crackdown is the relentless erosion of America’s influence in the region. By failing to even mildly condemn the Egyptian regime for its worst excesses, the Bush Administration has exposed the emptiness of its pro-democracy rhetoric. Moreover, by failing to come to terms with the growing influence of Islamists, the United States risks being reduced to a marginal player in the region in the not-too-distant future.

SIX DECADES OF REPRESSION: AN INTERVIEW WITH ABDEL-SHAHEED EL-ASHAAL
In an interview with Islamism Digest, this senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood discusses the latest crackdown, the Muslim Brotherhood’s political strategy and the failure of Washington’s policies in Egypt and the wider region.

THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD & EGYPTIAN LIBERALS: AN INTERVIEW WITH DR SALAH ABOU EL-FADL
In a comprehensive critique of the Muslim Brotherhood, this self-described Liberal Democrat and Consultant Psychiatrist outlines the changes the Islamic movement needs to implement before it is able to secure widespread support from Egyptian society.

THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD & EGYPTIAN CHRISTIANS: AN INTERVIEW WITH SAID SHEHATA
In a wide-ranging interview with Islamism Digest, Shehata, an Egyptian Coptic Christian and an expert on the Islamic movement, explains the Muslim Brotherhood’s relationship to other political forces in Egypt and the concerns of the Coptic Christian minority.
