Islamism Digest

The Centre for the Study of Terrorism produces a monthly journal, Islamism Digest, which is devoted to detailed coverage and comprehensive analysis of Islamic trends, issues, personalities and terrorism from the Islamic perspective. Featuring in-depth and information-rich articles and interviews, Islamism Digest is the only authoritative English-language journal dedicated to this area of research. The journal brings together authoritative analysis from across the Muslim world, in an effort to present a diversity of views.

Islamism Digest has three core features:

Primary sources

Much of the information is supplied by well-placed primary sources that is simply not available in the public domain.

Indigenous media sources

When using information from the media, we try to restrict this to the Arab and other indigenous media. The thinking behind this is that we can understand these phenomena better by relying on indigenous sources.

In-house research

Articles and interviews are produced in-house. However, we may accept contributions from others, provided these comply with our guidelines. In essence we will only consider articles that provide unique and in-depth information. The author must demonstrate deep expertise and access to
primary sources. If you are interested in contributing please contact us on info@cfsot.com

Islamism Digest - December 2008

EDITOR’S COLUMN

It is shocking to learn that as of 31 November 2008 the United States Government maintains nearly 1,100,000 names on its central terrorism database. Excluding aliases and other mistakes, this effectively means that the U.S. Government regards a very large number of individuals around the world – probably in the high hundreds of thousands – as terrorists and treats them accordingly. Very little (if any) explanation is given as to why these individuals have ended up on this dubious list or how they can be removed.

This month Islamism Digest develops the discourse on terrorism lists further by analysing and critiquing the U.S. National Counterterrorism Centre database. Evidence is provided from American papers and other sources in order to minimise the scope for misunderstanding and bias. The critical appraisal of the U.S.’ central terrorism database is set within the context of a search for more rational, fair and effective terrorism lists. Islamism Digest has taken the bold step of leading the quest for such an ideal template. Clearly, perfection is always beyond reach but it is hoped that the quest for “ideal types” can inject much-needed clarity and rationality in this important debate.

Moreover, in this issue we tackle the under-reported but pernicious phenomenon of Islamophobia. We argue that Islamophobia – apart from being racist and socio-economically disruptive – constitutes a form of terrorism. We also carry an interview with prominent British Muslim political activist Councillor Salma Yaqoob, who eloquently describes the nature and potential consequences of Islamophobia. Finally we present yet another paper from our Third Annual Conference in October. In this paper Dr Bashir Rahma – Deputy Secretary-General of Sudan’s Popular Congress – argues for a more universal definition of terrorism; one that takes into account the grievances and aspirations of all sides.
