Islamism Digest

The Centre for the Study of Terrorism produces a monthly journal, Islamism Digest, which is devoted to detailed coverage and comprehensive analysis of Islamic trends, issues, personalities and terrorism from the Islamic perspective. Featuring in-depth and information-rich articles and interviews, Islamism Digest is the only authoritative English-language journal dedicated to this area of research. The journal brings together authoritative analysis from across the Muslim world, in an effort to present a diversity of views.

Islamism Digest has three core features:

Primary sources

Much of the information is supplied by well-placed primary sources that is simply not available in the public domain.

Indigenous media sources

When using information from the media, we try to restrict this to the Arab and other indigenous media. The thinking behind this is that we can understand these phenomena better by relying on indigenous sources.

In-house research

Articles and interviews are produced in-house. However, we may accept contributions from others, provided these comply with our guidelines. In essence we will only consider articles that provide unique and in-depth information. The author must demonstrate deep expertise and access to
primary sources. If you are interested in contributing please contact us on info@cfsot.com

Islamism Digest - October 2008

EDITOR’S COLUMN

It is now seven years since the tragic events of 9/11 transformed our world forever. The attacks on 11 September 2001 presented the United States with a unique opportunity to showcase its global leadership and mobilise world public opinion against terrorism, irrespective of the origins and motivations of the terrorists. But sadly in a spectacular case of self-defeating arrogance and hubris American leaders managed to turn a unique opportunity into an unprecedented disaster. They over-reacted, invaded two countries and went on the ideological and rhetorical offensive against a wide range of forces and actors in the Muslim World. This has culminated into bloody wars, ideological conflicts and an unprecedented rise in anti-Americanism the world over. American leaders could not have done worse even if they had tried!

This month’s lead article examines the unravelling of the so-called “Long War”.We wrote about the transformation of the War on Terror to the Long War back in September 2007. One year on it is surprising how speedily American plans have unravelled leading to a strategic vacuum in Afghanistan and Iraq. These problems are compounded by America’s inability to contain the growing influence of Iran. The central - albeit secret - plank of the War on Terror was to weaken and eventually overthrow the Islamic regime in Tehran. The fact that the very opposite is taking shape speaks volumes about the depth of America’s failure.

This month Islamism Digest presents an unique interview with one of the leading figures in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Mohsen Araki. Ayatollah Araki has been a central figure in the judicial apparatus of the Islamic Republic. Moreover, he has led Iranian missionary activities in Europe and played a central role in Shi’a-Sunni unity forums. Ayatollah Araki is also a prolific scholar with an encyclopaedic grasp of Islamic andWestern philosophies.

Any anniversary of 9/11 should not go without condemning American human rights abuses. Nothing stands out more than the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay where hundreds have been detained without charge under extraordinarily cruel conditions. This month we speak to one of these victims, an Imam by the name of Mousa Zemouri who provides a terrifying account of his time at the hands of American gaolers and torturers. Finally, as part of our coverage on British Islam, we talk to journalist and Muslim convert Yvonne Ridley, who provides a critical analysis of Muslim institutions in Britain.
