Dr Kamal el-Helbawy - Chairman
Dr Kamal Helbawy, originally from Egypt, is a prominent scholar and consultant on Muslim affairs. His many writings include the status of Muslims in non-Muslim societies. He has held several academic positions, including the editor-in-chief for the Centre for International Policy Studies in London; advisor at the Institute of Policy Studies in Islamabad, and editor and founding member of the Arabic weekly, Qadaya Dawliyya (International Affairs). Until 1997, he served as the official spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood in the West. Dr Helbawy is the former chairman and founding member of the Muslim Association of Britain; a founding member of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY); former trustee of the Islamic Foundation (Leicester) and currently chairman of the Global Civilisations Study Centre (GCSC) and the Centre for the Study of Terrorism respectively. |
Mahan Abedin - Director of Research
Mahan Abedin is Director of Research at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Editor of Islamism Digest – a monthly journal dedicated to the study of Islamic Movements and terrorism from the Muslim perspective.
Abedin was educated at the London School of Economics, University of London. His core expertise is on Islamic movements and ideologies. He also writes and consults widely on Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. He has a long background in writing and editing and is a consultant on Middle Eastern issues to a wide range of individuals and organisations in Western Europe and North America. |
Abdullah Faliq - Director of Training
Abdullah Faliq is Director of Training at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Assistant Editor of the Centre’s Islamism Digest. A trustee of The East London Mosque (oldest mosque in London established in 1910), he is also the Head of Research at The Cordoba Foundation and also edits its journal, Arches Quarterly – which explores issues in dialogue and civlilisations. Through the Islamic Forum of Europe and the London Muslim Centre, he provided the launching platform for the Grand Mufti of Bosnia Dr Mustafa Ceric’s declarations of European Muslims.
Abdullah studied Arabic Language at the British Institute in Egypt, University of Jordan and Zarqa Private University. With an MA in Middle East Politics from Durham University, he is currently completing a doctorate on the politicisation of British Muslims and the influence of Arab political Islam at the University of London.
A founding committee member of the National Interim Committee of Muslim Organisations (NICMU) – a precursor of the Muslim Council of Britain, Abdullah is former president of Britain’s oldest youth Islamic movement – Young Muslim Organisation UK; founding member of The European Platform headed by Prof. Tariq Ramadan; co-ordinator of the Global Civilisations Study Centre; Media and Research secretary of the pan-European Islamic Forum of Europe; and founding director of the Muslim Community Radio (MCR). |
